Interoperability is often fundamental to how consumers and businesses use digital services. A lack of interoperability has been widely discussed as a potential obstacle to competition in some digital markets.
This economics discussion paper explores, in general terms, the links between interoperability and competition in digital markets. We discuss factors that may support a case for regulatory intervention to increase interoperability, as well as practical considerations and potential unintended consequences.
