Ofcom has received a request from the BBC for consent to broadcast exclusive live coverage of the Commonwealth Games 2018 (“the Games”). These are due to take place in Gold Coast City, Australia between 4 and 15 April 2018.
The BBC plans to broadcast coverage of the Games on BBC One and/or BBC Two (and their interactive streams). In addition, the BBC intends provide live and delayed commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live. Daily highlights of the Games are to be provided by Eurosport, and it is intended that Eurosport will also provide delayed coverage.
The Commonwealth Games is a listed event for the purposes of section 97 of the Broadcasting Act 1996 (as amended). The Ofcom Code on Sports and Other Listed and Designated Events (PDF, 71.2 KB) applies to such events. The Commonwealth Games is a Group B listed event under the Broadcasting Act 1996. In accordance with section 101 of the Broadcasting Act 1996, Ofcom’s consent is needed for exclusive live coverage of this event.
