Ofcom appoints new members to its Advisory Committees for Northern Ireland and Scotland

Ofcom has today announced the appointment of two new members to its Advisory Committee for Northern Ireland, and one new member to its Advisory Committee for Scotland.

Angelina Fusco and Michael Wilson join Ofcom’s Advisory Committee for Northern Ireland. Angelina is an independent media and journalism training consultant and former Editor of BBC Newsline. Michael is former CEO of Isle of Media and founder member of the Irish Film and Television Academy.  Ashe Hussain joins Ofcom’s Advisory Committee for Scotland. She is director of FortyLoveMedia and a member of Creative Scotland’s Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Group.

Ofcom’s National Advisory Committees provide advice to Ofcom about the interests and opinions of people living in the Nations and Regions of the UK on all communications matters.

The appointments are for a three-year term beginning 1 September 2021.

Chair of the Advisory Committee for Northern Ireland, Carrie Matchett, said: “I’m looking forward to working with Michael and Angelina on the Advisory Committee for Northern Ireland. Both Michael and Angelina have a wealth of experience in broadcasting and will have a great deal to contribute to our work in this and other areas over the coming years.”

Chair of the Advisory Committee for Scotland, Elizabeth Partyka, said: “I’m looking forward to welcoming Ashe to the Advisory Committee for Scotland. Her experience will be invaluable as we provide Ofcom with advice on issues such as the future of Public Service Media, regulation of the BBC, Channel 3 licence renewal and diversity in broadcasting.  Ashe’s knowledge and skills complement the range of experience already on the committee and allow us to represent the views of citizens and consumers in Scotland across Ofcom’s responsibilities.”

Angelina Fusco is an independent media and journalism training consultant living in Northern Ireland.  She is an associate trainer with the communications training company, Channel56.  She spent more than 30 years in the newsroom of BBC Northern Ireland – and half that time as editor of BBC Newsline. During her leadership, the BBC Newsline team won two Irish Film and Television Academy awards for best news programme and was nominated for several Royal Television Society awards. Angelina is Chair of Dart Centre Europe, a charity dedicated to informed, innovative and ethical news reporting on violence, conflict and tragedy. She also holds public appointments on the Board of Tourism Northern Ireland and the NI Committee of the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Michael Wilson has more than 30 years' experience as a CEO, managing director and independent director in the news, digital, creative and media industries. He is CEO of Isle of Media - the national development agency for the Isle of Man’s digital and creative economy. Prior to this, he spent 12 years as Managing Director at UTV and sat on its Executive Board. He also represented UTV on the Board of ITV Network Ltd. Prior to this, Michael spent a decade at Sky News in several senior roles including as Managing Editor, Sky News Ireland. He was also Head of Newsgathering at Five News. Michael was a longstanding member of the Royal Television Society’s Centres Council and is former Chair of both the RTS in Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man. He was a founder member of the Irish Film and Television Academy.

Ashe Hussain joined the Film City Futures’ FOCUS project as Business Support Co-ordinator in 2017 and has her own training company FortyLoveMedia Ltd. She has worked for and in partnership with broadcasters, as well as partnering with funding organisations and public sector bodies in the UK -delivering projects across the screen sector. Her main areas of expertise are business development for production companies, diversity, talent development and training. Ashe is also a member of Creative Scotland’s Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Group.
