The BBC has applied to Ofcom for consent to broadcast exclusive live coverage of the Commonwealth Games 2014 (‘the Games’). These are due to take place between 23 July and 3 August 2014.
These are listed events for the purpose of section 97 of the Broadcasting Act 1996. The rules which apply are set out in the Code on Sports and Other Listed and Designated Events.
The BBC plans to show live coverage of the Games on BBC One and BBC Two (and their interactive streams), with the exception of some ‘clashing’ Commonwealth Games events which will be shown on BBC Three. Highlights of the event will be provided by Eurosport. Furthermore, Ofcom notes that the BBC intends provide live commentary on BBC Radio Five Live.
In accordance with section 101 of the Broadcasting Act 1996, Ofcom’s consent is needed for exclusive live coverage of these events. Any comments that interested parties would like to make should be sent to Ofcom at the address below, by e-mail or in writing. Unless confidentiality is requested, all such comments will be available to view on Ofcom's website after the consultation has closed.
