Statement published 19 April 2024
We invited stakeholders to help us understand what good media literacy 'by design' is for social media, search, video-sharing and gaming services.
Ofcom has a legal duty to promote media literacy. Strong media literacy skills can help people use online services critically, safely and effectively.
In addition to our work that directly helps people develop their media literacy skills, we have also looked at how platforms can help people make informed decisions about what they do online.
We have suggested some common principles for how firms of all sizes can design their service in a way that promotes and supports their users' digital literacy. These principles are not exhaustive or legally binding, but you can consider them best practice.
