Sharon White, who stepped down as Ofcom Chief Executive last month, has been awarded a Damehood in the New Year's Honours for her work at Ofcom.

Dame Sharon White said: "I am very grateful. But this is really a recognition of the hard work and dedication of my colleagues at Ofcom."

Lord Burns, Ofcom's Chairman, said: "We are delighted for Sharon. Her award is testament to all that she has done for people and businesses during her time at Ofcom."

The Honours Committee said that at Ofcom she has overseen the legal separation of BT and Openreach, and also prepared the organisation to be the BBC’s first ever external regulator. She has been recognised for refocusing Ofcom’s mission around consumers, receiving Which’s Positive Change Award in 2017. She has also been active in promoting diversity in broadcasting, raising the profile of the issue in the media, and improving the quality of monitoring and data collection by the industry.
